The report took into account the various pollutants present in the air, the characteristics of the plants, and the ease of getting them on the market.
According to a BBC Mundo review, the most common pollutants that the plants are responsible for filtering are benzene, xylene, ammonia, trichlorethylene and formaldehyde, according to the study.
Bill Wolverton, director of the environmental organization Wolverton Environmental Services and lead author of that study, summarized the list and recommended the 5 best plants for cleaning the air in the home.
1. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
This is a very popular and readily available plant. It is very resistant and does not require great care, that is why it is widely used to decorate offices, shopping centers and other public places. It adapts easily to temperatures between 17º and 30ºC. We only have to water it when we notice that the earth is dry. It is effective at absorbing formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene.
2. Spatifilo, peace flower, wind sail, dead flower (Spathiphyllum sp.)
It can survive in low light and low water. It grows in temperatures above 18ºC. It is recommended to keep it away from drafts. Its flower, in reality, is a leaf that surrounds the seeds. It absorbs the five pollutants present in the air analyzed by the NASA report.
3. Bamboo palm or Chinese palm (Raphis excelsa)
This palm native to Asia can grow up to 3 meters in height. It is responsible for removing formaldehyde, xylene and ammonia from the air.
4. Mother-in-law's tongue, tiger's tongue, sansevierias, sword of Saint George (Sansevieria trifasciata)
It is widely used in interior decoration. It has the advantage of surviving in unfavorable conditions. If it is grown outdoors it can withstand very high temperatures (even 40ºC) and also very low (-5ºC), as long as these extremes are sporadic. Good at removing benzene, xylene and toluene, trichlorethylene and formaldehyde.
5. Rubber tree (Ficus robusta)
In a few years it can grow very fast. It is a plant that needs space. It is effective in removing formaldehyde from the air. It is also very resistant to disease. And as it has a high level of perspiration, it helps to maintain humidity in the environment.
